PAC Mate BX Series
The PAC Mate is the only Pocket PC device for people who are low vision or blind and is produced by Freedom Scientific. The PAC Mate now offers users an integrated Braille option. The PAC Mate BX series of personal data assistants comes with an eight-key Braille keyboard and features a speech-only unit (PAC Mate BX400), an integrated unit with 20 cells of braille (PAC Mate BX420) and an integrated unit with 40 cells of braille (PAC Mate BX440).
Because the PAC Mate is so lightweight and portable, it can go almost anywhere, extending to the user on-the-go access to notetaking, working or studying remotely, reading e-books, Internet, Email, and many other uses. It also is easy to learn and use. The PAC Mate BX comes with a braille keyboard. The keyboard replaces the traditional PDA stylus that is used to select items from a mainstream Pocket PC screen. The PAC Mate also is integrated with JAWS® for Windows, the world's most popular screen reader for the blind. JAWS "reads" aloud screen information, dialog boxes, and documents via a speech synthesizer, eliminating the need for the screen. JAWS users find that working with the PAC Mate is very similar to using a desktop computer.
The two CompactFlash ports of the PAC Mate and an expansive list of PAC Mate accessories can add even more versatility and power to the PAC Mate. Some examples include: StreetTalk (GPS Orientation), ScanTalker (barcode reading) and much more.

Additional Detail for PAC Mate BX Series
The PAC Mate is the first accessible Pocket PC that uses mainstream Windows® Mobile technology. Windows® Mobile is the leading handheld device operating system. PAC Mate puts adaptive technology in the palm of your hand. You can manage your schedule, send and receive e-mail, listen to music, read books, surf the Internet, create and share documents, and much more.
With the PAC Mate you can run Pocket PC versions of popular software programs (i.e. Word, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Excel and more!) to manage your information internally or sync up and share data with other devices. The PAC Mate allows you to surf the Internet and send and receive email with the addition of a modem, ethernet or WIFI card.
Because the PAC Mate is based on mainstream Windows Mobile technology, many off-the-shelf applications are available to add on to the PAC Mate. Some of these include accessible e-book reading programs and GPS solutions. PAC Mate users even design and share their own applications all the time!
The PAC Mate also is affordable and easy to upgrade. Its modular design makes it possible to purchase a PAC Mate unit, complete with a 20-cell or 40-cell PAC Mate Braille Display, or to purchase the PAC Mate unit only, and later add a braille display, without having to purchase a whole new unit.
The PAC Mate is the perfect choice for an accessible, powerful, on-the-go computer for the visually impaired.
