ScanTalker, a bar code reading application for Freedom Scientific’s PAC Mate, gives blind and low vision users a greater sense of security and freedom when trying to identify common consumer products that come in containers or packages with a bar codes on the label. Combined with the Metrologic omni-directional, USB-powered handheld bar code reader, ScanTalker’s built-in database matches the bar code and speaks the name of the product, including packaged grocery items, health and beauty goods, and audio and video compact discs. ScanTalker also provides information found on the product label that sighted people sometimes take for granted, such as preparation instructions and nutritional values.

ScanTalker users can identify common items found on store shelves using the UPC bar code on the product labels. The Metrologic omni-directional, USB-powered handheld bar code reader used with ScanTalker (not-included) is easy for a blind person to use. Simply point the reader at the product, and the bar code is scanned regardless of its orientation relative to the reader.
ScanTalker's database contains over 1.2 million UPC codes in the following categories:
- More than 285,000 grocery and over-the-counter pharmaceutical items
- More than 320,000 CDs and DVDs
- More than 90,000 health and beauty items
- More than 500,000 general merchandise goods

- When an item is scanned with the bar code reader, ScanTalker matches the bar code with information in its database and speaks the product brand and name.
- ScanTalker also reads and speaks information such as preparation instructions and nutritional values. You can hear as much or as little as you want using keyboard commands.
- If an item is not among the ones already listed in the ScanTalker database, you can add the item, and it will be recognized the next time you scan it.
- The application also comes with 100 labels you can affix to personal items you add to the database.
