What is the best way to view photographs with the SmartView Xtend?
Simply press the picture button to view photos in accurate colour
If the picture is too dark can I make the picture brighter?
Yes, simply adjust the brightness control on the front of the SmartView Xtend.
In a colour picture, similar colours are indistinguishable, can I adjust
the SmartView Xtend to provide more colour definition?
Yes, in many cases colour definition can be improved by reducing the brightness. Similarly colour definition can be reduced, if desired, by increasing the brightness.
I would prefer the colours in a colour picture to be stronger than their
natural state, can I adjust the SmartView Xtend to saturate the colours?
Yes, you can enter the menu on the SmartView Xtend and either increase the colour adjustment or turn on the enhanced colour option.
I am getting too much glare off a page, can I reduce this glare?
Yes, depending on the situation you can:
- hold the document flat, if it is curled over.
- reduce the brightness, or
- If you are in text mode and the background is white, select either the gray or black background.
- If the glare is coming from an external light source, try adjusting the room lighting or moving the SmartView Xtend to a different location.
I am viewing text, can I make the text clearer and easier to read?
Yes, first ensure you are in text mode, which converts the text to high contrast.
Then depending on your eye-condition, you can try:
- increasing the magnification
- a different false colour combination
- reducing the brightness
- increasing the contrast setting in the SmartView Xtend menu.
I have a preferred false colour that I always like to use, do I have to
always cycle through all the false colour options?
No, when you are in your preferred false colour, hold the text button down until the SmartView Xtend beeps, and pushing the text button will then cycle you through your preferred false colour combination, black on white and white on black.
I can only seem to get three false colour options in text mode, how can
I get all the options available on the SmartView Xtend?
The SmartView Xtend has been set to cycle only through the preferred false colours, so hold the Text and Picture buttons down, until the system beeps, and the full cycle will be restored.
I find the beeps annoying, can I turn them off?
Yes, enter the menu in the SmartView Xtend and then turn the beeps off using the beep menu item.
I find signing documents difficult, does the SmartView Xtend have a feature
that can help me with this?
Yes, in modules 1-3 there is an enhanced page locator that will allow you to locate the signature space on the monitor, and then locate the same place on the document placed on the reading table.
I find reading in a straight line difficult, can the SmartView Xtend help
me with this?
Yes, in modules 1-3 there is a lines function and blinds function. When turned on you should find that either of these functions will assist you in reading.
I find that I have a magnification level that I use the majority of the
time, can the SmartView Xtend remember this for me?
Yes, in modules 1-3 there is a preset function, that when held down until the system beeps, will remember the current magnification setting.
When viewing photos or documents I find the background or surrounding
text distracting, is there a function on the SmartView Xtend that can help
me remove this clutter?
Yes, in modules 1-3 there is a blinds function that allows you to obscure clutter in images and documents so they are not distracting.
I would like to use my SmartView Xtend with my large TV, is this possible?
Usually yes, the SmartView Xtend has a TV out connector that will allow the SmartView Xtend to be plugged straight into a NTSC TV.
I would like to use my SmartView Xtend with my PAL TV, is this possible? PAL TV out support is not provided with the SmartView Xtend.
I would like to upgrade my unit to a higher level model, can I do this
myself?
No, upgrades can only be done by HumanWare dealers, distributors and service centres.
I have module 2 and now want computer access, can I upgrade to a module
3?
Yes, ULVA can arrange this for you with a module 2 to module 3 upgrade kit.
Can I upgrade the flat screen on my SmartView Xtend?
Yes, the SmartView Xtend should work with any flat screen. HumanWare has tested a number of flat screens and so you may want to contact HumanWare to see if the flat screen you are considering buying has been tested and is known to work well with the SmartView Xtend.
What is the best mode to use when viewing something in my hands like a
medicine bottle?
Objects such as medicine bottles are best viewed in photo mode so push the
photo button to obtain a colour image. If text on the bottle is difficult
to read then try:
- pushing the text button to improve the contrast
- adjusting the brightness
Somehow I have ended up in the SmartView Xtend menu system, how do I exit
this?
Press the Text button.
